Anastasia Kobekina, one of the most distinctive young voices of the cello today, has taken on one of the great milestones in the instrument’s repertoire: Johann Sebastian Bach’s six Cello Suites. These works, recorded by legendary figures such as Pablo Casals, Mstislav Rostropovich, Yo-Yo Ma, and Mischa Maisky, remain an almost unavoidable challenge for every major cellist, combining technical mastery with an intimate, deeply personal dimension.
Sony Classical released Kobekina’s new album Bach: Cello Suites on 26 September 2025, following a period of growing recognition that includes the Leonard Bernstein Award and an Opus Klassik Award in 2024. Her interpretation brings a historically informed perspective, drawing on her studies in baroque cello, while aiming to create, in her own words, “a shared space for interpretation, mine and yours.”
To mark the release, Sony has shared this official video of the Prélude from Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007 — perhaps the most iconic movement in the entire set, and a gateway into a recording that Kobekina describes as both architectural and profoundly emotional.
